Massey To Take NHRA Eliminations One Round At A Time

  1. COMMERCE, Ga. (May 5, 2012) - Spencer Massey gets a chance to get a little revenge for Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown in Sunday's first round of eliminations in the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

A week ago at Houston, Lucas beat Brown in the final round and ended Brown's 12-race winning streak over Lucas.

And Lucas is who Massey will face to start the 16-car elimination rounds at the track located about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Massey, however, has more on the line. He'll start racing second to Brown in series points driving the Prestone/FRAM dragster tuned by crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler.
Massey insists he'll take Sunday's championship eliminations one round at a time, but it's impossible for him not to look further down the dragstrip.

If Massey beats Lucas, he could face Brown in the second round. And if Massey advances to the semifinals, he could meet teammate Tony Schumacher, who is the No. 1 qualifier.

"Man, racing in NHRA Top Fuel is never easy but for me to win the trophy on Sunday I might have to race three of the best cars out here and both of my teammates ... and that would be just to get the finals," Massey said.
Massey and Lucas are the only Top Fuel drivers to have won more than once this season through six events; Massey has three titles and Lucas two this year in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Massey qualified fourth and Lucas surprisingly qualified 13th.

"I feel confident for Sunday with Todd, Phil and all the Prestone/FRAM guys. We have a great organization at Don Schumacher Racing. I hope I get to race Antron and Tony. That will mean we all did pretty good.

"We weren't the quickest out here in qualifying, but we ran good in the heat and that's what will matter (Sunday). Being the No. 1 qualifier on Friday night when its cooler is great for Friday night but that won't help Sunday when we race in the heat of the afternoon."

Temperatures in the mid-80s and relative humidity hovering around 60 percent held down performances Saturday and a similar forecast is for Sunday.
